Rotating aluminium louvres: closed when it rains, half open for shade, fully open when you want the sun. With remote control, and a rain sensor as an option.
A fixed roof is a compromise: when it rains you want it closed, in May you want it open. With louvres you decide that day by day. On a warm afternoon you set them ajar, so the heat can escape but the sun stays out. If it starts to rain, you turn them closed and you sit dry.
Per bay up to about 4 by 6 metres. Larger terraces we do in two bays side by side, with one post in between.
Remote control, wall switch or through your phone. Several bays move at a single press.
Closes the louvres automatically as soon as it starts to rain. Handy if you are often out.
Dimmable LED spots built into the beams, operated with the same remote control.
Zip screens concealed in the posts, for the low sun that comes in under the roof.
Anthracite, cream white or black, and the louvres can differ in colour from the frame.
Each louvre turns on a shaft concealed in the side beam, driven by one motor per bay. The water runs along the louvres to the gutter and disappears through the post — so you see no downpipe along your wall. The wiring for the motor, the sensors and the LED lighting all runs inside the profiles.
A louvred roof costs more than a fixed veranda: there is a motor in it, the structure is heavier and the louvres are made to order. Size and the number of bays account for most of it; rain sensor, LED and screens are separate options.
Allow for the preparation as well: concrete footings under the posts and a 230V connection nearby. Those costs are separate from the roof itself, but they belong in your budget.
A fixed roof of glass or polycarbonate is cheaper and simpler: no motor, no wiring, nothing that can break. You choose a louvred roof because you want to be able to follow the weather. Under a closed glass roof warm air sits still; with louvres you open them a crack and the heat draws away while you sit in the shade. You notice that difference most in July and August.
A louvred roof is heavier than an ordinary veranda and needs a solid base — usually concrete footings under the posts. Allow for a 230V connection near the structure as well. Both are best arranged before the roof is delivered.
Rain on aluminium louvres sounds louder than on glass. Most people like it; if you are sensitive to it, let that weigh in. Maintenance comes down to clearing the gutter and wiping the louvres a few times a year. Open them in winter so no water sits on them.
The roof keeps the rain out, the walls the wind. Together they keep you sitting there into October.
Louvres block the high sun. For the low evening sun you put a screen in front.
Torn between louvres and a fixed roof? The veranda page shows what the difference is in practice.
A louvred roof is a purchase you think about for a while, and rightly so. It costs more than a fixed roof, it needs a solid base and a power connection, and it is not something you put up yourself on a Saturday. We are honest about that. What you get back is that you can follow the weather instead of compromising with it.
Four steps. The first you do yourself, the rest we take care of.

View all questionsWhen closed, yes. The louvres seal against one another and the water runs along the gutter and away through the posts. In heavy driving rain from the side some may blow in, just as with an ordinary canopy.
The louvres stay as they are. As soon as the power is back the controls work again. On most systems you can disengage the motor by hand if you really need to.
The structure is calculated for the snow load that occurs in the Netherlands. In heavy snow you open the louvres and the snow falls through.
Yes, an ordinary 230V connection near the structure. Have it installed before the roof goes up; that saves a second appointment.
A louvred roof is heavier and more precise than an ordinary veranda. Handy DIYers manage it with three people, but we recommend installation by our partner — certainly for the electrical connection.
Ten to fifteen working days. A little longer than a fixed veranda, because the louvres and the motor are made to order.
